As Christians there should be certain things that set us apart from those who have not yet come to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.  The character of Christ should be evident in the lifestyle of every Christian.  God’s wisdom and grace should be reflected in the things that we say, the manner in which we speak and how we respond to others.   Making the greatest impact with the words we say is done by speaking words of life.

The Bible tells us that our words are powerful enough to speak life or death. That alone should always cause us to be intensely aware of the things that we say.  Some ways of assuring that this occurs is to fill our hearts with the things of God.  Being intimate with Him, knowing His word, and His way of doing things makes speaking words of life simple and natural.

The opposite is also true. Just as we can speak words of life we can also speak harmful words that can bring about death.  The wrong words spoken can crush someone’s spirit.  Negative words can even invite all kind of chaos into one’s own life.  Remember this very important scripture:

Words kill, words give life; they’re either poison or fruit—you choose.

                                                                                                       Proverbs 18:21 MSG

May we always be people who choose to speak life over our own lives and the lives of others. May the content of what we say be wrapped in the character of Christ. May the tone in which we speak be a sweet sound in God’s ear.

 Reflections

  1. Have you ever spoken words of life over people or situations?  If so, what was the outcome?
  2. Are you aware of times when the tone in which you say things do not reflect God’s love?
  3. If you answered yes to #2 what do you do to bring about correction?

God Bless!
